Alabama customers

Spire customers in Alabama can start the process of applying for federal energy assistance for their natural gas or other energy bills through by visiting the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs website.

Missouri customers

Spire customers in Missouri can start the process of applying for federal energy assistance for their natural gas or other energy bills by visiting the Missouri Department of Social Services website.

How do I know if I qualify?

To qualify, you must meet each of the following: 

  • Be responsible for paying your home's heating and cooling costs
  • Be a United States citizen or legal resident
  • Have $3,000 or less in bank accounts, retirement accounts and investments
  • Meet specific income guidelines 
Do I need to reapply each year?

You will need to reapply for LIHEAP each year even if you received funding last year.

What do I need to apply?

Below are the documents you need to complete the application process:

  • Current heating bill (natural gas, propane, electric, fuel oil, wood or kerosene)
  • Current electric bill
  • Copies of social security cards for all household members as well as their birth dates (if your household currently receives food stamps, only the social security numbers and birth dates are required)
  • Copies of income documentation such as paystubs for the prior month, current award letters, pension statements, etc. (if your household currently receives food stamps, your income documentation is not required)
  • A copy of your shut off notice if your account is in disconnect status
What if I make too much money to qualify?

If you earn more than the median income requirements for LIHEAP, please explore our other energy assistance programs or give us a call so we can work with you on a personalized energy assistance plan.

How do I get started?

In Alabama: Visit adeca.alabama.gov to find the community action agency for your area and start applying.

In Missouri: Visit mydss.mo.gov to apply online or print your application. Or, you can contact your local community action agency if you're not able to print your application.
