Spire provides energy saving tips as fall begins
By following simple tips, customers can save energy and, in turn, money
ST. LOUIS (Oct. 1, 2024) — As seasons change and temperatures begin to cool and many turn on their furnaces for the first time in months, Spire is providing energy-saving tips to help families stay comfortable and warm while saving energy and money.
“Taking these small, affordable steps to weatherize your home can make a big difference over the course of the winter heating season,” said Paul Englert, weatherization specialist at Spire. “We want to help customers take control of their energy use, which will ultimately reduce their bill.”
Natural gas is considered one of the most affordable options for heating, cooking and drying clothes – according to the American Gas Association, natural gas customers save an average of more than $1,100 a year – and by following some simple steps, customers can conserve energy and, in turn, save money.
Energy Saving Tips
There are several weatherization tips Spire recommends to manage energy use and save money. How much? The Department of Energy says weatherizing a home or business can reduce energy costs by 35%. For example:
- Replace furnace filters once a month or as needed. Also, have your furnace serviced annually to keep systems operating efficiently
- Install insulating drapes or shades around drafty windows to prevent cold air from seeping in
- Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to let sunlight naturally warm up the home. In the evening, close the curtains to reduce potential drafts
- Seal any areas around the home where air could come in, such as pipes, chimneys and windows
One practical suggestion from Englert is what he calls a “dollar bill test” to see if doors are sealed properly. “Take a dollar bill and close the door on the bill,” said Englert. “If it’s easy to pull the bill, then the seal is bad. If the bill doesn’t pull out, then the sealing is good. Think of it like your actual money going out the door.”
