Don't let "Energy Vampires" drain your wallet

They may not wear capes, have fangs or come out at night, but “energy vampires” are real — hiding among the household items you use every day.

An energy vampire is a device or appliance that continues to soak up energy even when it’s turned off or not actively in use. Over time, all that wasted energy adds up.

The good news: keeping them in check is simple.

First, consider upgrading outdated appliances to newer, more energy-efficient models. It’s also a good idea to unplug countertop gadgets like coffee makers, toasters or phone chargers when they’re not being used.

Regular maintenance helps, too. Changing your furnace filter every 90 days keeps your system running smoothly. And don’t forget to repair leaky faucets — they waste both water and the energy used to heat the water.

With these simple habits, you can keep energy vampires at bay and save money.
