Safe grilling reminders

July is National Grilling Month, making it a great time to brush up on your safe grilling skills. Before your next cookout, check out these safety reminders from Spire grill expert and service supervisor Clarence Murry.

  1. Check for gas leaks: Before using your gas grill, check for leaks by applying a soapy water solution to the connections. If bubbles appear, a leak may be present. Additionally, always trust your sense of smell. If you smell a rotten egg odor, stop and call Spire's 24/7 emergency line or 911.
  2. Clean the grates: Remove grease and residue from the grates before and after each use to prevent fires and improve the flavor of your food.
  3. Open the lid before turning on the grill: This prevents gas from accumulating inside your grill, which could cause a flare-up.
  4. Stay close: Never leave your grill unattended while it's in use and keep a fire extinguisher handy in case of an emergency.
  5. Don't forget to shut off the gas: When you're finished grilling, turn off the burners and the gas supply before walking away.
