Simple ways to save this summer

Even when the weather is warm, your home relies on natural gas to keep up with your routine, from the moment you step into the shower to the feeling of pulling fresh laundry from the dryer.

Manage your energy use and save money all summer long with these simple tips:

  • Lower your water heater temperature: Water heating accounts for about 18% of the energy used in a typical home, according to the Department of Energy. Setting your water heater to 120 degrees helps conserve energy while providing plenty of hot water for everyday use. It also helps reduce the risk of scalding.
  • Adjust your thermostat: If you're heading out for the day or taking a summer trip, raise your thermostat a few degrees Fahrenheit while you're away. When you return home, set it back to a comfortable temperature. A programmable thermostat makes it easy to adjust the temperature automatically, helping you save energy without giving it a second thought. Plus, Spire offers rebates to help make upgrading more affordable.
  • Install a faucet aerator: A faucet aerator is a small device that reduces the amount of water flowing from your faucet. Installing a low-flow aerator can help lower the energy needed to heat water while also reducing water use. As a bonus, it can help reduce splashing around the sink.
  • Seal air leaks: Keep warm air outside by sealing cracks and openings around doors and windows with caulk or weatherstripping.
  • Wash full loads in cold water: Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible and wait until you have a full load before running your washer or dryer. When it’s time to move clothes to the dryer, separate heavier items from lighter fabrics. If your dryer has a moisture sensor, be sure to use it to avoid over-drying.
